It is true that of all the environments, yours is perhaps one of the easiest to integrate with Open Source technologies.
If you run Mac OS X, then you know the power of Open Source and UNIX technologies, but even you can also make savings:
OS X is a great piece of Engineering, we use them too, but you need a powerful Mac to get the most from it. If you are running G3 or older Macs you are put in the shade, or so you thought
- Perhaps you have older Macs, and cannot afford to upgrade. You can continue to run your older design programs on some Macs, and upgrade some to Linux to get the even better functionality as Mac OS X users get with the UNIX software, since it all runs much faster and better on Linux!
- You definitely should not run old Mac OS 9 servers that are insecure, upgrade to Linux and user carrier grade Linux SMTP servers like Mac OS X server does, for a whole lot less
- If you need to run Graphics software, perhaps for web design, then the GIMP Open Source software will serve you well. No need to run Photoshop in Classic mode!
- If you have high powered graphics and video requirements, then by all means buy a few Mac OS X machines to run those.
- Remember, that nearly all high end Hollywood film production involves Linux at some stage, especially 3D animation render farms on cheap hardware. There is even an Open Source QuickTime streaming server available!
- With your servers all running Linux, you can run the original versions of all the software built into Mac OS X server on your existing hardware.
